Forest, Environmental Research & Services (FERS) Limited was founded in 2005 by Pat Moran and Kevin Black. FERS currently has 4 full time staff and collaborate with associates specialising in various aspects of forestry and environmental science. FERS currently runs 3 distinct divisions: forestry; environmental; and geographic information system (GIS) consultancies.

The forestry division specializes in green house gas and timber inventories, climate change, forest establishment, resource management, crop nutrition, tree growth modelling, nursery management and GIS web based and stand alone decision support systems. We also participate in national and EU research projects. Our client base includes Coillte, Green Belt, private foresters, the Forest Service, EPA, COFORD, UCD, UCC, Teagasc, Aether, and the German Community Bank (GIZ). We are registered foresters and ecologists with the Forest Service. We also develop bespoke software for the forestry industry and run a statistical advisory service.

The environmental division specializes in appropriate assessments, ecological impact assessments, habitat & botanical survey, invasive species survey & management, bat surveys, terrestrial mammal surveys and bird surveys. Clients include OPW, NPWS, Tara mines and local councils.

The GIS and remote sensing division specializes in GIS database management, creating of GIS systems for business, drone and UAV technologies for monitoring and inventories, remote sensing, land use and habitat mapping using satellite platforms. We aim to develop smart data products for our current (Coillte, Green Belt, Teagasc, NPWS) and future customers.
